Slide Collection
This smallest unit is made up of original black-and-white and colour
slides. Most of the black-and-white slides are stereo photographs
made during the first decades of the 20th century. Colour slides
gained importance some twenty years ago when newapapers, magazines,
books started to show an increasing demand for old photographs in
colour..
The majority of the colour slides are framed narrow films, originally
designed for projection. They were used from the mid- 1930s onwards.
Earlier, from the late 1900s, colour photography was pursued with
autochromes, grainy photographs on 9x12 cm glass plates still preserving
their colours.
The collection has color slides of Governor Miklós Horthy and his
family, the procession on Saint Stephen's day (20th August), the
bombardment of Budapest, and of the events of the revolution and
freedom fights of 1956. From the 1970's on, color slides are no
longer exceptional. They can be found in large numbers among the
photographs of Irén Ács and in the archive of the Képzőművészeti
Kiadó (Fine Arts Publishing House).
There are 1200 catalogued slides in this unit.
