Department of protection of works of art and instauration

The survival of the valuable works of art at the Hungarian National Museum is due to the work of the colleagues at the Department of Protection of works of art and Instauration. The profession demands creative abilities in both fine and applied arts, along with the analytical thinking of natural sciences, and a manifold knowledge of culture. Instaurators use up-to-date tests, and after testing, they apply the newest techniques and methods, this way ensuring the longest possible life for the artifacts.

Lately, the establishment of an appropriate environment for the artifacts, the preventive protection of artifacts is gaining more and more importance. The colleagues of the department play a major role in the planning and carrying out of such projects. With their knowledge and expertise they also help Hungary's other museums in their work to protect artifacts. They share their experiences and results in numerous Hungarian and foreign trade papers. They organize national and international trade conferences, with their regional relations they hold together and aid regular professional colloquy. They are in close co-operation with the Hungarian and foreign leading professionals in artifact protection, helping with in-service trainings.
